PorscheFest ‘98

by Mike Killian, Tobacco Roads Editor

On Friday afternoon, May 15th, the area around Charlotte's Hyatt South
Park Hotel began to take on the appearance of an automotive fantasy land
as Porsches of every description began to arrive for PorscheFest '98. Not
only red, white and black ones, but yellow, green and blue models too;
along with a few in some wilder hues. As the third level of the Hyatt's parking
garage began to fill with Stuttgart's finest, members of the Carolinas Region
busied themselves with event registration and the pleasant task of becoming
reacquainted with fellow members not seen in awhile.

Old friends from Peachstate Region were also on hand, including Zone 3
Representative Danny Saxton and his wife Cathy. There were many stories to tell
about recent events, and much anticipation of the activities to come during this
weekend filled with Porsche fun.

Event chairman Chuck Zachman, having spent months in preparation for this
moment, was able to calmly observe as his well prepared team of volunteers
welcomed the arriving participants.

Why yes ... I do use Ultrabrite.

With registration going on in the hotel hospitality room, and tech inspection in the
garage, no one had to go far to find a PCA member to engage in conversation.

Tina Angalichio's registration crew was performing at Porsche Parade efficiency
levels, and Hendrick Porsche's Jim Burton was teching cars with the precision only
a professional technician could bring to the task. And speaking of event sponsor
Hendrick Porsche, the merchandise boutique set up and manned by Eric Cook at
registration (and the next morning at the concours site) tempted one and all with
the latest in Porsche related clothing, models, and various accessories.

As the evening and the welcoming party in the hospitality room wore on, the tally
of PorscheFest '98 participants continued to climb. The count was finally complete
at 64 cars!

Saturday morning dawned bright and warm. Very warm. The concours entrants
might have preferred a little less heat, but that didn't keep them from filling one
section of the Kaiser Permanente parking lot with their pristine Porsches.

Concours chairmen Mike Rich and John Nelson had their judging teams in action
right on time, and anxious owners began the ordeal of watching others look for
imperfections in their cars. With the show cars on one side of the parking lot and
the spectator cars on the other, there were examples of nearly every production
Porsche ever made in this one spot. Picking a People's Choice candidate may have
been everyone's toughest chore of the morning.

As it turned out, Steve Santee’s yellow 356C garnered that honor, with Mike and
Lenore Rich’s ‘83 911 picked as 'Best In Show' by the judges.

Completing Rick and Lynn Leander’s open book Tech Quiz on Saturday morning
was another major task. Where did all those car related movie questions come
from?

After lunch it was time to do some driving, and Rally Masters Tina Angelichio
and Lynnae Phillips provided the perfect venue.

Rally 1.GIF (79983 bytes)
Yeah ... you in the back ...

A low-pressure gimmick rally of the answer-the-questions type gave everyone an
opportunity to tour a bit of Charlotte and its environs, and to experience nice
Porsche roads. Some of the real estate seen along the way wasn't too shabby
either. Those who wandered much beyond the 58 mile official distance of the route
in search of answers had to pay the odometer penalty, but everyone had a good
time nonetheless. John Griffin, especially. (Ask him.)

Dad ... how much longer is this going to take?

Final Instructions ...

The Saturday evening banquet and prize giving extravaganza was preceded by
a cocktail party in the Hyatt's outdoor courtyard. The day's events and Porsche
subjects in general dominated the many conversations taking place. Once underway,
the banquet lived up to everyone's expectations of these events.

Banquet organizer Tina Angelichio (one busy lady!) had orchestrated an enjoyable
evening. Event chairmen presented the Concours, Rally and Tech Quiz awards; PCA
National Treasurer Dave Lumpkin spoke of national matters; Zone Rep Danny Saxton
updated Zone 3 and Parade agendas; Carolinas Region President Gary Bumgardner
gave a brief state-of-the-region address; and event chairman Chuck Zachman
introduced and warmly thanked event sponsors Hendrick Porsche (whose entire
service department was in attendance), and Darrell Smith of J.J.B Hilliard, W.L.
Lyons, Inc.

During all of these proceedings Walter Stone and his band of merry door prize
distributors were giving away goodies at a phenomenal rate, and Ed Coon, video
camera firmly attached to right eye, was capturing it all for instant broadcast in the
ballroom.

It was a festive evening which did not end with the final goodnight from the dais,
but continued in an adjacent room until the wee hours. It was only the promise of
the autocross the next morning which finally drove the stragglers to bed. As Sunday
began, Autocross Chairman Joe Elliott had the task of creating a pylon course on the
half-mile tri-oval at Concord Motorsports Park in Concord, North Carolina. (This is the
same Concord, North Carolina where NASCAR hosts the longest race on the Winston
Cup schedule each May, But this is not the same track.)

CPF98 - Track 1.GIF (93440 bytes)

With just three gates and three slaloms to break up the left- turn monotony, Joe
fashioned a quick course that had 911s snatching third gear, while keeping them a
safe distance from the nasty looking concrete retaining walls.

CPF98 - Track 2.GIF (87267 bytes)

As the day progressed the lap times dropped, and by mid afternoon everyone
had done their best to beat the clock and each other. After the last runs were
complete, beautiful glass trophies were presented (kudos to Tina Angelichio, once
again, for her selection of awards) and happy Porsche Pushers had reached the
conclusion of the Carolinas Region's second annual multi-event weekend.

CPF98 - Track 3.GIF (104381 bytes)

Like all events where anticipation is high before the start and intensity is great once
underway, the end seems to arrive very quickly. That's pretty much the definition
of a good time, and that's what was had at PorscheFest '98.

CPF98 - Track 4.GIF (71815 bytes)

Many thanks to Chuck, Tina, and the members of the organizing committee who
helped make this event such an overwhelming success. Start planning now to attend
Carolinas PorscheFest ‘99.
